2008 Spring Break Mississippi Mission Trip

Teens from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City traveled to Bay St. Louis, MS during spring break 2008 to help with the reconstruction effort in the gulf coast area.

Lilly Kim, one of the youth group members, describes the trip in her own words: “My experience in Mississippi was incredible. It was my third trip, and the most memorable. Though I gave up beaches and sleeping in during spring break, it was definitely worthwhile. Going into the trip, I was kind of dismissive about the extent of damage that could still be left, after almost three years. Boy, was I in for a shock. Houses still stand half blown away, deserted by their owners. I heard so many touching stories that truly impacted my point of view on my own life. The most fond memory I have is seeing the look on the owners’ faces when our crew finished drywalling three entire rooms or when we picked up piles (mountains) of trash and debris from a yard. I will never forget how grateful the owners were and how much our helping hands meant to them. I definitely would like to go back and continue helping out.”
